The controversial plan for Australia to host a Serie A league fixture has been given the go-ahead by UEFA's governing body.

Last month, Serie A President Ezio Maria Simonelli revealed he was confident that AC Milan's game with Como in February would be allowed to be played in Australia, following a proposal from the country to host the fixture.

The need for a change of venue comes because Milan's San Siro is being used that weekend for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games, opening up the idea to host the game at a different venue.

Despite some backlash over moving the fixture and UEFA always insisting they are against domestic league matches being played outside the home country, the move has now been approved by football's European governing body and will be part of Matchday 24 next year.

The game will be played at Perth's Optus Stadium on either February 7/8, 2026, with Milan set to give reimbursements for this match to those with season tickets.

The Stadium holds over 61,000 fans, but given the long distance, many of the club's season ticket holders are not expected to make the trip for Milan's home game.'

Speaking of the decision to allow the game to take place, along with Barcelona's match with Villarreal, which is headed to Miami, a UEFA Statement said.

“League matches should be played on home soil; anything else would disenfranchise loyal match-going fans and potentially introduce distortive elements in competitions,” said UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin.

“Our consultation confirmed the breadth of these concerns. I would like to thank the 55 national associations for their constructive and responsible engagement on such a sensitive issue.

“While it is regrettable to have to let these two games go ahead, this decision is exceptional and shall not be seen as setting a precedent.

“Our commitment is clear: to protect the integrity of national leagues and ensure that football remains anchored in its home environment.”
