This Sunday, December 14, one of English football's greatest rivalries returns as Sunderland host Newcastle United in the Tyne-Wear Derby.

Sunderland, who have impressed in their return to the pinnacle of English football, currently sit in ninth place with 23 points.

After a slow start to the season Newcastle are only one point behind in twelth, and will be looking to make it five unbeaten in the Premier League with a victory against their fierce rivals on Sunday.

The two sides from the North East have not clashed in the Premier League in over nine years, further adding to the excitement ahead of this weekend's main event.

Ahead of the match we look back at three of the greatest moments in recent history between the two foes, giving you a reminder on what the notorious rivalry between the Geordies and Mackems can produce.

DAZN News will also provide all of the information surrounding the upcoming Premier League grudge match.

Defoe's marvellous left-footed volley

There are not many people loved more in Sunderland than Jermaine Defoe.

The late Sunday afternoon kick-off seemed as if it was heading into half time goaless.

But as the fourth official was announcing the additional one minute of added time for the first half, Jermaine Defoe latched onto a hopeful flick-on from Steven Fletcher and blasted home a sensational 25 yard weak-foot volley into the top right corner.

The Premier League bagsman's wondergoal became the moment Sunderland secured five Premier League derby day wins in a row, making it extra iconic.

Nolan's hat-trick in derby day demolition

A derby day fans of the Magpies will look back on fondly.

The game started fierce and compeititvely with both sides having chances and flying into tackles - until the 26th minute when Kevin Nolan opened the scoring with a lovely improvised over-the-head finish from a corner.

From that moment, everything went in favour of the Toon Army. Kevin Nolan went onto to score a hat-trick, former player Titus Bramble got sent off, and Newcastle recorded their biggest win over Sunderland in 55 years.

Kieran Richardson's drought-ending free-kick

Newcastle were in the relegation zone but had the extra ambition of making it ten undefeated against their hated rivals.

As the scores were all level in a balanced game at the Stadium of Light, Kieran Richardson lined up to take a free kick just outside the penalty area.

Richardson slammed home a beatiful strike into the top left corner. If you blinked as Richardson was running up, by the time you opened your eyes again he was in the corner celebrating. That is the speed and power he executed the free-kick with.

Sunderland finally ended their seven-year win drought against Newcastle in a game which featured some iconic throwback names such as Man United legends Dwight Yorke and Nicky Butt, Newcastle cult heroes Shola Ameobi and Fabricio Collocini, and one of Harry Redknapp's 'old reliables' in Pascal Chimbonda.

"It’s not unusual to lose and concede situations against Man City. I think we won't be the the only team this season to struggle here. We'll learn from different experiences and we'll be ready for the derby."

"I think we will pick a team that will be strong tomorrow and strong on Sunday. We have a few injuries to our backline which has been the case for a few games now. We don’t necessarily have the depth at the moment, but we come here with a strong squad and we are ready for both games this week."

Sunderland vs. Newcastle prediction

Like all, I cannot wait for this one. Not just because of the passion and energy that comes with a Tyne-Wear derby, but also because this one could go either way.

Eveyone is aware of Sunderland's triumphs this season and no doubt they will head into this one with full belief, accompanied by a daunting atmosphere at the Stadium of Light.

You also have to question what physical condition Newcastle will be in after they visit Leverkusen in a crucial UCL game.

But whilst Sunderland so far have had a better season than Newcastle, they do not have better players, and they are not a better team.

I think the quality Newcastle has in players such as Guimaraes, Tonali and Woltemade will pull them through.

Prediction: Sunderland 1-1 Newcastle
