Why Tottenham Hotspur must raise their game ahead of Everton showdown

Much was made of Tottenham Hotspur’s impressive start to the season, and rightly so, but are they suffering their first wobble under Thomas Frank?

The charismatic Dane has looked, and sounded, the part since swapping Brentford for Spurs during the summer but his men head to Everton on Sunday without a win in their last two games.

Here, DAZN News assesses their strengths and weaknesses as Frank bids to get Tottenham’s season back to winning ways.

More invention needed after Monaco stalemate

Tottenham showed precious little in the way of creativity and attacking flair during their goalless draw at Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday.

In truth, they could have easily headed home from the Principality on the back of a comfortable defeat.

The smattering of boos from the travelling fans hinted at the dissatisfaction in the performance.

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario kept Monaco at bay with an outstanding display.

Some 23 shots came his way and five of them brought particularly impressive saves.

At the other end of the field, Wilson Odobert showed some encouraging signs but it was largely one-way traffic.

There is plenty of attacking talent within Tottenham’s ranks in the likes of Richarlison, Mohammed Kudus, Brennan Johnson and Odobert.

But finding his best side and sticking with it may be Frank’s biggest challenge right now.

Away form a cause for optimism

Despite losing 2-1 at home to Aston Villa last weekend, and then stuttering again at Monaco in midweek, Spurs’ form on the road offers huge cause for optimism ahead of Sunday’s trip to Everton.

Their previous away game in the Premier League saw them beat Leeds United 2-1 at Elland Road just before the international break.

That marked a third win in four unbeaten away games in the league and suggested Spurs are made of far sterner stuff this season.

Certainly they appear a more cohesive and resilient outfit to the one which slumped to their worst Premier League finish under Ange Postecoglou last term.

After two games without, this is a mere blip

Nobody seems quite sure how good Tottenham can be this season, least of all themselves, but that they are heading in the right direction under Frank is undeniable.

True, losing at home to Villa last weekend and then stumbling to a poor display in midweek at Monaco dampened the feelgood factor surrounding their encouraging start.

But a win at Everton really would get Spurs’ season back on track and send out a strong message to the rest of the Premier League.

The Toffees are unbeaten in four games at their plush new home at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Should Frank’s men take all three points, though, it would leave them pushing towards the end of the Premier League once again.

And for a club who endured such a pitiful league campaign last term, that is not to be sniffed at.
