The 2021 Volvo Car Open presents another opportunity for Canadian teenager Leylah Annie Fernandez to put the tennis world on notice.
Two weeks after the 18-year-old captured her first-ever WTA title by winning the Abierto GNP Seguros in Monterrey, Fernandez embarks on another tournament. The Montreal native did play in last week's Miami Open, but she fell in straight sets in a first-round match that was less than 24 hours removed from her emotional victory in Mexico.
Fernandez should be much more prepared — both physically and mentally — for battle in Charleston, although the World No. 72 will not have an easy path.
Unfortunately, Fernandez will be the lone Canadian on the courts in the main singles draw as fellow Canucks Gabriela Dabrowski and Katherine Sebov both fell in the qualifying stages.
