2025 NFL Draft: Top 5 QB Prospects

Shedeur Sanders - Colorado - 6’2”/ 215 lbs

Shedeur Sanders takes his legendary last name into the first round after finishing 2024 as the most accurate quarterback in the FBS. He was fifth at the position in attempts (481), vindicating his 73.4% completion rate.

Sanders has presence as a signal caller - a key attribute for efficient quarterback play in the NFL. He had only eight turnover worthy plays last season, the seventh lowest total in the country. Sanders had over 130 more throwing attempts than any of the players in front of him in the top six. 

Sanders has received Hall of Fame advice on playing football at the highest level. He is well prepared to handle the pressure of leading a franchise on the field and the nuances of fame off it. His ability to throw the ball deep will pair well with a young and talented receiver like Malik Nabers in New York.

Cam Ward - Miami (FL) - 6’2”/ 223 lbs 

Ward’s numbers improved while playing at Miami in 2024. He was surrounded by the best talent of his college career, a trend that will undoubtedly continue in the NFL.

He was 10th among qualified quarterbacks in completion percentage (67.2%) and carried an exceptional touchdown to interception ratio (39:7). Throwing over five touchdowns to each interception separated him significantly in the category from Shadeur Sanders and Will Howard. 

Ward’s story is intriguing. He is experienced after playing for three different schools, adapting to new coaching staffs in 2020, 2022 and 2024. This will help him learn an NFL playbook and he is no stranger to different locker room styles . He has some unconventional habits with his throwing angle and footwork, but so do players like Patrick Mahomes.

Riley Leonard - Notre Dame - 6’4”/ 216 lbs 

Riley Leonard did not throw at the level of his counterparts in this class, but he has the best dual threat potential of the group. 

Leonard posted 982 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground in 2024. He must improve throwing the ball to have success in the NFL, but his athleticism gives him a chance. 

Leonard played in the ACC for four years. He started at Duke in 2021 and transferred to Notre Dame ahead of the 2024 season. Leonard played in big games last season, leading the Irish to the National Championship game in 2024. Toughness is a common adjective attached to Leonard, which combined with his frame, will help extend drives in the NFL.

Dillon Gabriel - Oregon - 6’0”/ 200 lbs 

Dillon Gabriel offers exceptional football intelligence through a smaller frame than most scouts would like. 

Size can be overcome in the NFL with the right combination of skills, including poise, accuracy, ball-security and an ability to avoid sacks. Gabriel has these in spades and has proven it in five separate seasons in the FBS. In 2024 his touchdown to interception ratio was five to one (5:1).  In the right offense, Gabriel could offer Russell Wilson-like potential with a left-handed sling. 

Gabirel hails from the Hawaiian islands and finished his college career last season with Oregon. He spent 2022 and 2023 with Oklahoma, seasons preceded by three years at UCF. Six seasons of college football equates to a plethora of experience. Gabriel’s completion percentage was north of 68% in three of those campaigns.

Will Howard - Ohio State - 6’4”/ 235 lbs 

Will Howard passes the eye test. He has the prototypical quarterback frame and is coming off a National Championship season at arguably the top college football program in the United States. 

Howard’s production took a notable leap after transferring to Ohio State from Kansas State. He threw 35 touchdowns in 2024 with an outstanding completion rate (72.8%). The main concern with Howard is his willingness to make risky throws against zone defenses. NFL defenders will anticipate his reads much quicker than those of the Big Ten. He will need good protection and feel to escape the pocket with a bigger body. 

Howard has enjoyed a long college football career. Prior to his success at Ohio State, he was a part of two teams at Kansas State that finished inside the top-20 college football teams in 2022 and 2023.
