The offseason departure of offensive mastermind Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears has led to uncertainty about the Detroit Lions' ability to maintain their offensive spark in 2025.

Under their former offensive coordinator, the 2024 Jared Goff-led Lions' offense finished second only to the Baltimore Ravens in passing yards, total yardage, and passing yards per attempt.

Head coach Dan Campbell remains confident Goff and Co. can get the job done in Johnson's absence.

"(The players are) the ones who make it what it is. That's our playbook, those guys."

Former Denver Broncos passing coordinator John Morton was appointed as Johnson's replacement, rejoining the team after serving as the senior offensive assistant in 2022.

Morton's familiarity with the scheme could prove beneficial as he takes on the daunting challenge of following in the footsteps of one of the brightest offensive minds in the NFL.

Campbell has previously spoken of his belief that Morton can help Detroit's offense remain explosive and recently re-emphasised that the team's offensive identity is built around its talented players.

"This offense is Jared Goff, (Amon-Ra) St. Brown, (Jahmyr) Gibbs, (David) Montgomery. It's Frank (Ragnow); it's (Penei) Sewell; it's (Taylor) Decker. I can keep (going). It's (Jameson) Williams. That's what we are."

Goff enjoyed a career year in 2024, and Campbell believes the best is yet to come from the 30-year-old.

"Everything we wanted him to do in the offense (last season), he did." Campbell raved of his signal-caller before adding, "I would anticipate that to take another step up."

The Lions have made a concerted effort to keep their offensive player personnel intact heading into 2025, returning 10 of their 11 starters from last season. Only veteran guard Kevin Zeitler departed in free agency.

Only time will tell whether Goff, Morton and Co. can replicate the offensive success which led to a 15-2 regular season record and a playoff berth.

Still, with a trusted core of players, rising confidence in Goff, and Campbell's unwavering belief, Detroit is betting that continuity -not just coaching- will keep the offense roaring in 2025.
