Entering Thursday night, the Los Angeles Chargers had lost three of their last four games and desperately wanted to avoid falling to .500.
Well, they responded by jumping all over the Minnesota Vikings, scoring on three of their first four possessions and thoroughly dominating both sides of the ball toward a 37-10 home win at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert completed 18-of-25 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns, while tossing one interception, finding three different wideouts for the scores. Kimani Vidal also rushed for 117 yards and a TD on 23 carries.
The Thursday Night Football rout victory not only helped the Chargers wash out the sour taste of their loss to the Indianapolis Colts just four days prior, but it also offers them a confidence boost as they improve to 5-3 and remain in the hunt in a competitive AFC West.
Herbert authored a 14-play, 83-yard opening drive for the Chargers on Thursday evening, before finding rookie wideout Oronde Gadsen for an 8-yard touchdown pass.
Their next drive had the Chargers taking it eight plays for 59 yards, ending in a 3-yard rushing TD from Vidal.
Following a Vikings’ field goal, it was Herbert marching the Chargers 94 yards down the field in just over three minutes before connecting with Ladd McConkey streaking down the sideline for a scintillating 27-yard touchdown connection.
The Chargers took that 21-3 lead into halftime and kept piling on from there as Herbert would find Tre' Harris for paydirt in the fourth quarter as well.
On defense, the Chargers roughed up Carson Wentz for five sacks and an interception, limiting the QB to 144 yards and one TD. The lone bright spot for the Vikings was star wideout Justin Jefferson, 26, who hauled in seven catches for 74 yards to help become the youngest player in NFL history to reach 8,000 receiving yards.
Week 9 will have the Chargers visiting the struggling Tennessee Titans (1-6), while the Vikings (3-4) will be on the road against the tough Detroit Lions (5-2).
