Whether a slow down-by-down gridiron battle of attrition or a breakneck, flying pace, yes, even a Super Bowl can end on a field goal or with an electric punt return that goes the distance.
Football fans will see if either pans out during Super Bowl LIX between the defending back-to-back champions Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans on Sunday night.
DAZN News has already analyzed the quarterback matchup between Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts , how the running backs Saquon Barkley and Kareem Hunt stack up , and which team's wideouts have the advantage .
Now, we look at the special teams/kicking prowess of each squad heading into the big game.
Harrison Butker has been perfect this postseason, cashing in on all four of his field goals and five extra point attempts without a miss. And that includes pressure cooker situations as Butker’s 35-yard field goal with 3:33 remaining in the Chiefs’ AFC Championship game turned out to be the winning kick that propelled the defending two-time champs back to the Super Bowl.
During the regular season, Butker converted 21 of 25 field goals for an 84 percent clip. Within that, the 29-year-old went 2-for-5 with field goal attempts of 50 yards or greater.
As for the Chiefs’ punt return game, Nikko Remigio opened eyes in the AFC Championship game by breaking out a 44-yard return that he nearly went the distance with were it not for a tackle from behind.
All said, the defending back-to-back champs are potent with Remigio’s returning and Butker’s muscle memory kicking.
Jake Elliott has converted 6-of-7 field goals and 9-of-12 extra point attempts this postseason.
That’s up from the regular season where Elliott kicked through 28 of 36 field goals for just a 77.8 percent success rate.
The Eagles need Elliott to convert every time they send him out to the field to dethrone the champs.
As for the Eagles’ return game, they might be aided by the return of Britain Covey.
The wide receiver took part in practice Wednesday and could possibly see some time on Eagles’ special teams if he’s ready Sunday night.
But with Butker perfect this postseason and Remigio peaking at the right time, the kicking/special teams edge goes to the Chiefs, who now have an overall 3-1 edge.
