After swapping spots over the offseason, Aaron Rodgers and Justin Fields were pitted against each other in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season Sunday.

Both quarterbacks impressed in their new uniforms but Rodgers gave New York Jets’ fans a bitter dose of what they craved more from him when he was with Gang Green.

The future lock Hall of Famer aired it out for 244 yards and four touchdowns in his debut for the Pittsburgh Steelers, leading them to a 34-32 road win over the Jets at MetLife Stadium in Rodgers’ return to East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Fields, who played for the Steelers last year, threw for 218 yards and a touchdown, while adding two more TDs rushing in the loss. Fields’ first rushing touchdown late in the third quarter helped the Jets take a 26-17 lead into the fourth.

But Rodgers had already begun mounting a furious rally, first authoring a nine play, 68-yard drive spanning under four minutes and capped by a five-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Warren.

After New York fumbled on the next kickoff return and Pittsburgh recovered, Rodgers took advantage of excellent field position at the Jets’ 22-yard-line, needing only two plays to find the end zone. His 18-yard TD strike to Calvin Austin III and that extra point put the Steelers up 31-26 with 14:07 left.

Still, Fields proved to have plenty of fight left as he led the Jets on their own 12-play, 67-yard drive which ended in a goal-line rushing touchdown.

When that two-point conversion failed, the Jets clung onto a 32-31 lead with 7:01 remaining.

Though operating out the shotgun from Pittsburgh’s own 19-yard line, Rodgers would later connect on three key passes to set up what turned out to be a game-winning 60-yard field goal from Chris Boswell to give the Steelers a 34-32 edge with 1:03 left — a score that stood.

Rodgers’ fireworks helped launch a successful opening week for the Steelers who will now host the Seattle Seahawks in their home opener during Week 2.
