NFL trade candidates: 5 players who could be on the move this offseason

The first domino of the NFL offseason will topple this week, when the window for franchise tagging players opens.

That will be quickly followed by the NFL Combine, free agency and the draft, as all 32 teams look to improve rosters and set out their route to Super Bowl LX in San Francisco.

Trades will also play a big part in the offseason roster shakedowns, with some big players potentially set to move. DAZN News takes a look at some of the players to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

Deebo Samuel, San Francisco 49ers wide reciever

Deebo Samuel’s 49ers exit looks to be nailed on, with several reports indicating that the player has been given permission to find a trade partner.

The 49ers have a lengthy list of offseason priorities, not least sorting out an extension with quarterback Brock Purdy and after two seasons beset by injury and unproductive play, Samuel appears to be expendable.

Given the versatile wideout’s previous output, the six-year veteran should have plenty of suitors.

Kirk Cousins, Atlanta Falcons quarterback

The Falcons spent big to bring veteran free agent Cousins in a year ago, only to immediately move up in the draft to land Michael Penix Jr, casting doubt over the former Washington QB’s long-term future in Atlanta, which has only heightened after a below-par season.

A trade may be tricky however, as he has a no-trade clause in his contract, so an arrangement that suited all parties would have to be reached and would not come cheaply for the Falcons, who may need to absorb some of Cousins’ contract if they are to move on.

Garrett Wilson, New York Jets wide receiver

The Jets are in full rebuild mode, with new head coach Aaron Glenn electing to move on from Aaron Rodgers, so with a need at quarterback, the team are likely to put all options on the board when it comes to trades and roster movement

Wilson has cut a frustrated figure in recent months and that leaves the new regime in a position where they must either present their vision of the future to the talented wideout and get his buy-in, or trade him and get back a haul of draft picks that can accelerate their rebuild.

DK Metcalf, Seattle Seahawks wide reciever

Metcalf is about to enter the final year of his Seahawks contract, so factor in this, plus an inconsistent season which saw him fall behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the Seattle receiving corps pecking order and you have the stage set for a trade.

The fact that Metcalf is still only 27 means he could attract a decent market and allow the Seahawks to put more resources into their running game, something head coach Mike Macdonald is keen to do.

Tee Higgins, Cincinnati Bengals wide reciever

After playing under the franchise tag last season, Tee Higgins could be a tag-and-trade candidate for the Bengals, who may look to snag more than just the compensatory pick they’d receive if they let the wideout go via free agency.

The Chiefs did this move with L’Jarius Sneed last year, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the March 4 franchise tag deadline here.

The number of wide receivers with question marks surrounding their future will also play into the market this offseason - could this mirror last year's crop of free agent running backs, which was headlined by Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry?
