What does the future hold for Louis Rees-Zammit after re-signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars

While the announcement that Louis Rees-Zammit has re-signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars has excited many, some are more pessimistic about his chances of establishing a long-term NFL career.

Unfairly high expectations aside, DAZN News evaluates the Welshman's NFL journey so far and explains what we can realistically expect from him in the future.

Developmental year

Rees-Zammit's doubters often cite the example of others who have tried and failed to make a similar cross-sport transition.

His sceptics may feel justified after what appeared to be a disappointing rookie season. Rees-Zammit did not play in a regular-season game and was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars at the end of the year.

Rees-Zammit possesses the physical tools required of NFL skill players.

However, his dream of becoming an established NFL player was always going to depend on his ability to master the nuances of the game.

The difficulty of competing with players who are similarly gifted athletically and adopted the sport from an early age must not be overlooked.

With that in mind, rather than feeling disappointed with how Rees-Zammit's rookie year unfolded, perhaps the doubters should consider that spending the year on practice squads may have been precisely what he needed.

Spending the year on the sidelines learning from others around him was always likely to be Rees-Zammit's ceiling in year one.

Year two outlook and beyond

Re-signing with the Jaguars means Rees-Zammit will battle with 90 players for a spot on the Jaguars' 53-man roster for the NFL season, which kicks off in September.

While he is a long shot to remain among those 53 players on the active roster, there is every reason to believe Rees-Zammit can succeed.

Still only 24 years old, the difference between Rees-Zammit and others who have attempted similar transitions is that he has time on his side.

The NFL's announcement in 2024 that it would expand practice squads to include an extra spot for one international player also helps Rees-Zammit's cause.

The additional practice squad spot, along with Rees-Zammit's youth and drive to succeed, boosts his chances of achieving his dream of becoming an NFL player.

These points were not lost on Rees-Zammit, who, even after being released by the Jaguars at the end of the season, never doubted his future in the sport.

"I didn't just leave rugby just to try it for a year. I think people would be pretty dumb to think that I was just going to kind of just leave straight away.

"I'm not ready to give this up and, and I don't think I ever will be. I'm very grateful for this opportunity from the Jags to allow me to sign another contract and give it another go."

Rees-Zammit must remain patient as he waits for his opportunity. Still, considering his dedicated mindset and ambition to succeed, we cannot rule out the possibility that he can succeed where others have failed.
