More than 200 players will hear their names called during the NFL draft this coming weekend. Of all the young prospects hoping to be among that number, few are as difficult to evaluate as Tyler Shough – for several reasons.
One is because Shough – a quarterback who shone with Louisville last year and whose last name is pronounced “Shuck” – isn’t all that young. He will turn 26 years old during the early weeks of his rookie NFL season.
With three seasons ended by injury and another disrupted by Covid, Shough was granted enough additional eligibility that he spent seven years in the college ranks, taking in spells with three different schools.
His collegiate career began so long ago, in fact, that he was once the backup to current Los Angeles Chargers superstar signal caller Justin Herbert at Oregon. Herbert has completed five seasons in the NFL.
Another stark indicator of Shough’s unusually advanced age for an upcoming draft prospect is that, coming out of high school, he was part of the same recruiting class as Trevor Lawrence, who was the No.1 pick in the 2021 NFL draft.
And while the likes of Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix proved last year that a longer college career can better prepare a quarterback prospect for quick NFL success, Shough doesn’t boast the same kind of game experience.
In fact, last season was his only full campaign as a starter. He finished his seven-year college career with just 32 starts under his belt (Nix had 61 and Daniels had 55).
But in that sole full season last year, Shough showed the tools and production to match any quarterback in the 2025 draft class, throwing for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns and just six interceptions.
At 6ft 5ins, he has the ideal frame of an elite quarterback, while his tape from Louisville clearly shows he has the arm strength and talent to excel as the centrepiece of a pass-heavy offense. He is an impressive athlete, too, having run the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine in 4.63 seconds.
Were it not for his age and injury history – he suffered two broken collar bones and a broken fibula in his three seasons at Texas Tech – Shough might have rivalled Cam Ward to be the first overall pick.
As things stand, he is likely to be selected either at the tail end of the first round or early in the second. With reports claiming some NFL general managers believe him to be the most talented quarterback available this year, Shough could be one of the steals of the 2025 draft.

The 2025 NFL Draft begins on Thursday, April 24 at 8pm on the East Coast / 1am Friday in the UK.
This year's NFL Draft will be available to watch for free on NFL Game Pass on DAZN (excluding the US and China).
