During the Jake Paul-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. DAZN Pay-Per-View on Saturday night, Logan Paul took a few minutes away from his booming WWE career to talk.
As part of his chat with DAZN, Logan admitted that his younger brother and Canelo Alvarez were “this close” to making a fight happen, but in retrospect that ‘The Problem Child’ wouldn’t have been quite ready.
“As big as that fight was, I think he needs a little more time to mature his boxing skills before taking on a challenge that monumental,” Logan Paul conceded candidly.
“That said, that’s why he’s Jake Paul … because he takes on the challenges that no one else has the balls to do. And time and time again, he proves himself right and proves the haters wrong.”
Paul said this before his brother went out and defeated Chavez Jr. by a comfortable unanimous decision. With the victory, which improved Paul to 12-1 (7 KOs), there have been reported rumblings that he might garner an official ranking at cruiserweight which would put him in line for a crack at a world title.
At cruiserweight, champions Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez and Jai Opetaia seem to be on a collision course to further unify the division.
But the remaining titleholder at cruiserweight might make the most sense to clash with Paul in due time — and that is WBC champion Badou Jack.
Throughout his boxing career, Paul has showed a penchant for choosing older fighters who are well past their primes. In fact, the only opponent younger than Paul was Tommy Fury who produced a split-decision win over the YouTuber/boxer in February 2023 in a verdict that still irks ‘The Problem Child’ today.
But Jack presents a complex quandary of a different kind.
At 41, Jack is 13 years older than Paul. However, he is riding a seven-fight win streak, having just retained his title in May with a majority decision over Noel Mikaelian.
Though his bouts are not always the prettiest to watch, Jack is as savvy of a veteran ring general that boxing has to offer today as he continues to develop crafty ways to win.
Either his sweet science tactics will be too much for a still-learning Paul to figure out … or ‘The Problem Child’ will use his youth and exuberance to become a world champion as he has sought out to do.
We will not know unless the fight is made. What's the harm in finding out?
I don't want to hear Jake Paul getting a title shot is bad for boxing.
What is bad for boxing is inexplicable judges' scorecards, fighters missing weight and the business/politics of the fight game delaying bouts. Not Jake Paul receiving a title shot.
If anything, it is a rite of passage for a ranked fighter — something that Paul might accomplish in the days ahead.
A willing David Benavidez moving up from light heavyweight would take precedence, though Paul is a viable option — like it or not.
While Logan felt like Jake might not have been ready to take on the likes of a Canelo, how would he fare against a world champion in Badou Jack?
Again, we will not know unless the fight is made.
It is a prospect that at the minimal must at least be explored at this point.
