Oscar De La Hoya, a former opponent of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, has made his prediction for the heavily rumoured rematch.
Reports on Monday evening suggested that the two are in discussions for a second encounter at some point in 2026, with Netflix the possible broadcaster.
If a second Mayweather-Pacquiao fight becomes a reality, then it will be 11 years since their record-breaking encounter, which the American won by unanimous decision.
While it was a contest that brought the world to a standstill, it's a common consensus that the fight failed to live up to expectations, and this was a feeling echoed by De La Hoya.
"Maybe I could be the referee," De La Hoya joked during an interview with talkSPORT.
"The first fight was many years ago, it was an okay fight. Now they’re going to do it again apparently, it’s all entertainment, that’s the way I see it.
"I don’t know if it’s going to be an exhibition or a real fight. If they make it a real fight with real rules, it’s an okay night for boxing."
De La Hoya fought Mayweather in May 2007 for the WBC super welterweight title at the historic MGM Grand in Las Vegas, which at the time was the most lucrative boxing match ever. Unfortunately for De La Hoya, he would lose the bout by split decision.
'Golden Boy' would then face Pacquiao 19 months later and would be stopped in the eighth round.
When asked to give his prediction, De La Hoya backed a physically fitter Mayweather to triumph against a 46-year-old Pacquiao.
"I think Mayweather will take it. One thing about Mayweather you have to understand is that he’s always taken care of himself. His body physically, mentally, he’s always been very sharp.
"That’s the big advantage he has, he’s an athlete."
