Oscar De La Hoya has urged Ryan Garcia to take a lengthy break from the ring as he recovers from hand surgery.
The result was later changed to a ‘No Contest’ and there had been hopes that the pair would square off in a rematch later this year.
Garcia and Haney shared the same bill last month when they both appeared on the huge Times Square show in New York City.
Haney was able to get past Haney, but Garcia could not live up to his side of the deal as he was floored and outpointed by Rolly Romero.
Since that fight, Garcia has placed some care on his body after getting his tools for combat repaired, but De La Hoya, Garcia’s promoter, is eager for one of his star pupils to take some more time off.
"He just got surgery. He's going to take a look at his shoulder now,” said De La Hoya when speaking to The Ring.
“I actually would like Ryan to think about taking the whole year off. Getting his mind straight and comfortable to where he feels good. There is nothing lost for him. He has injuries and he has to get those fixed.
"But I think more importantly he has to get his life in order. I've lived it, and I am pretty sure everyone is telling him things left and right. He has to take a deep breath, a step back, analyze, and reassess life to put it all in order. It's just my opinion. I hope he takes the year off."
