Dillian Whyte trainer makes shock admission ahead of Moses Itauma fight

Itauma vs Whyte - August 16 - only on DAZN PPV

Dillian Whyte's trainer Buddy McGirt has raised eyebrows when it comes to his charge's preparations for his next fight.

Whyte is set to face the exciting Moses Itauma on August 16, live on DAZN PPV, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and it's a contest which could have huge implications for Whyte's boxing career.

A win would prolong the 37-year-old's career, while a loss could result in retirement, and usually when preparing for a contest of this magnitude, fighters often watch their opponent's past outings to find any flaws which could be exploited.

However, when speaking to DAZN, McGirt revealed that he has not watched Itauma inside the ring, but himself and Whyte are treating this upcoming contest like a world title bout.

"I’m going to be 1000% honest with you, I’ve never seen Moses fight, so I don’t really know what he’s ready for. He’s got to bring it all," McGirt said.

"I said ‘Dill, listen, what does this kid do that you haven’t already seen. But can that kid ask the same question?’

"We’ve been training hard like it’s a championship fight. Moses is a good young prospect; we’re working every day like we’re fighting for the world title."

The American also gave insight into what Whyte has been working on in camp.

Whyte is often a fighter who is not afraid to sacrifice defence in order to trade leather with his opponents, but with the knockout power which Itauma possesses, McGirt explained why 'The Body Snatcher' needs to be smart come the opening bell in the Saudi Arabian capital.

"Working on sharpening up the defence, not getting crazy," McGirt responded when asked about what's been happening at training camp.

"When he gets hit, that’s when he wants to go to war, but it’s not always about that, you’ve got to be smart.

"You’re old, build in each round, if you get hit, not trying to give it back right away."

Whyte will certainly need to be disciplined against Itauma. The latter's punching power has made him one of boxing's most exciting operators with 10 of his 12 wins coming by way of knockout.

This heavyweight contest is a fitting main event which also sees WBA featherweight champion Nick Ball in action and David Adeleye going up against Filip Hrgovic.
