Yankiel Rivera will have Jake Paul’s and Amanda Serrano’s full support when he headlines Most Valuable Promotions’ Fight Night this weekend at Caribe Royale Orlando in Orlando, Florida, and live on DAZN.
Rivera (7-0, 3 KOs), the undefeated pride of Puerto Rico, will clash against unbeaten Venezuelan Angelino Cordova (19-0-1, 12 KOs) with the WBA flyweight interim world title on the line Saturday night.
Rivera had three wins in 2024 including his fourth-round TKO of Angel Gonzalez Jr. in December, while Cordova scored a unanimous decision over Josue Jesus Morales that same month. The Rivera-Cordova winner will put himself in position to challenge flyweight WBA/WBC world champ Ricardo Sandoval.
With the stakes high, DAZN News's Mark Lelinwalla analyzes who has the edge between Rivera and Cordova.
Behind a disciplined, tight guard, Yankiel Rivera is able to generate pressure with forward movement from his 5-foot-3 frame.
The Puerto Rican flyweight downloads information in real time effectively, showing his ring IQ whether it’s wrapping a right hook around a lax guard or making stinging deposits to the body at the right time.
That will be up against the scrappy style of Angelino Cordova whose strength — and vulnerability — resides in his ability and willingness to stand and exchange fire in the pocket.
If Rivera can read and time the Venezuelan's punches in traffic, he might have a sizeable edge in their bout.
Rivera is known for his sweet science skills more than his power, with three of his seven wins coming by the way of knockout. Though, he has pop in his punch for his size.
Still, Cordova’s style packs more power to his punch with 12 of his 19 victories being delivered via knockout.
His willingness to engage in heated trades also gives him the nod when it comes to power.
Rivera has a rich amateur pedigree as a five-time National Champion and carries plenty of promise as a standout signing of Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions.
But with that comes pressure as well.
The undefeated Cordova counts nearly triple the professional experience of Rivera and has gained plenty of savvy having fought against former flyweight world champion Julio Cesar Martinez last year.
Clashing with Cordova presents a rugged challenge that Rivera will need to show and prove his skills to overcome.
Until he does that, the slightest — and we mean slightest — edge here goes to Cordova.
After representing Puerto Rico to the fullest on the amateur scene, Yankiel Rivera’s pro career has gotten off to an exciting start.
While the experience factor within the pro ranks has DAZN News giving Cordova a 2-1 edge, Rivera could take leaps and bounds with a statement victory over a tough out in the Venezuelan warrior.
Rivera certainly possesses the boxing toolbox to accomplish just that.
