Cambridge see off Accrington to make it 11 games unbeaten in all competitions

PA

Cambridge beat Accrington 2-0 to make it 11 games unbeaten in all competitions.

The hosts created the few openings of the first half, with Louis Appere heading well off target following Liam Bennett’s cross after 12 minutes.

An Adam Mayor corner almost flew straight in but was punched away by Ollie Wright, before the U’s opened the scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Sullay Kaikai had time to pick a pass across goal which fell into the path of unchallenged defender James Gibbons, who blasted home past Wright.

Ten minutes after half-time James Brophy freed Kaikai on the left but his effort was pushed away by Wright, though Kaikai did make it 2-0 on the hour when he nodded Mayor’s cross in from close range.

Accrington offered virtually no threat, their biggest chances coming 17 minutes from time as Conor Grant’s free-kick was deflected wide and then Dan Martin’s powerful effort was blocked.

Cambridge reach Christmas having lost only once at home in 15 games so far this season.
