Talk to anyone about Chelsea enforcer Moses Caicedo and the soundbites are always the same.

“Outstanding holding midfielder… likes a tackle… could he be as good as the great Claude Makelele?”

Well, what better way to answer that question than by speaking to Makelele himself in an exclusive interview with DAZN News.

The former Blues man earned legendary status at Stamford Bridge after a brilliant five-year stint which harvested two Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup.

Now 52, Makelele looks back on his time at Chelsea with great pride as Enzo Maresca’s side prepare to face Qarabag away in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Makelele smiles at comparisons between him and Caicedo, who has proved a big hit since arriving from Brighton for £115 million in August 2023.

The ex-France star had a telling message for Caicedo, though, saying: “I learned a lot from the big players and my teammates about understanding the game.

“It was about understanding my position, my leadership, the silent leadership, body language, and technically what it takes to perform.

“It can happen in a game where players are scared, but you take the responsibility, get hold of the ball and make your teammates not worry because everything will happen in a good way.

“You take the initative from the manager because he does not have time to give the message.

“Caicedo, when he reaches this level, will be a top, top player because sometimes you need a manager on the bench and another on the pitch.

“It takes responsibility and I'm seeing for the moment that he's a little bit shy.

“But if he has an ambition to be the top midfielder in the world then he needs to take this kind of responsibility.

“This is very important for him and I'm sure he can do it.”

Claude Makélélé was speaking on behalf of bet365, the official global partner of the UEFA Champions League, which is hosting its Big Ticket Giveaway on Tuesday 4th November outside Kings Cross Station from 1530, where fans have the chance to win tickets to UEFA Champions League matches.
