Manchester City claimed an emphatic 3-0 victory over cross-town rivals Manchester United on Sunday, putting the Sky Blues back in the win column after back-to-back losses in the Premier League before the international break.
It was a needed victory for City, who came into Sunday's match below their neighbours in the standings.
But while things are rosy in the blue half of Manchester following their three-goal victory, Sunday's result brought the red side crashing back to Earth. The Red Devils went into the break on the heels of their first win of the season, and they were undefeated in their previous two league games.
And going into Sunday's derby, United held the mental advantage of going undefeated against Pep Guardiola's men last season, lending some promise that their next trip to the Etihad Stadium could bear some fruit in a campaign centered around rebuilding.
Instead, they were blown out by their rivals, thanks to a pair of goals from Erling Haaland and an early strike by Phil Foden.
Speaking after the match, United manager Ruben Amorim attempted to make sense of the performance, in which the Red Devils out-possessed and out-passed their opponents but were out-shot and easily out-scored, despite the possession discrepancy.
For Amriom, it all came down to what City did when they regained the ball.
"If you look at the goals, we can avoid those goals," Amorim told BBC Match of the Day. "That was the biggest difference.
"We can do better, especially the second goal. We suffered goals we can avoid."
Amorim specified that Man City were perfectly fine holding onto less of the possession because they knew exactly what to do with the ball once they got it, a sense of clarity and quality that he said his side lacked — on both sides of the ball.
"The biggest difference was when we had transitions, we didn't score," he explained. "In the second half, they did better in transition, and we suffered in that moment.
"We can do better, that is clear, but again transitions - the third goal, lack of quality in the connection, people don't know who is going to the ball, and then the guy is free to score. The first one, he is in the middle of four guys, and we can be aggressive in that moment.
"In these kinds of games, we need to be perfect, and in this game, we were not perfect. The frustration is always the same because with the amount of chances we need to score goals.
"We need to work on a lot of things for the next game."
