Aston Villa left St. James' Park with a 2-0 win over hosts Newcastle United on Sunday, and Ollie Watkins is crediting the work the Villans did before kick-off for the victory.
Watkins scored the game's second goal in the 88th minute to seal the result for the visitors, with teammate Emi Buendia breaking the deadlock early in the first half.
The Villans knew that Sunday's match would be a hotly contested one, but Watkins explained that his side was able to disrupt the Magpies' home advantage by taking it to their hosts and not allowed them to get settled.
"It is a really difficult place to come and the momentum they get from their fans," Watkins told Sky Sports. "I think we got the game plan spot on today. We didn't play in front of them, we just played in behind and I don't think they were prepared for that.
"I feel like it was a strong performance from us and I think we could have won the game by a lot more."
Watkins was happy for both the team and himself in the way Sunday's match unfolded, pointing to some earlier disappointments as motivation to do well at St. James' Park this time around.
"I've had some shocking performances here so it was nice to break the duck and perform individually and as a team," he said. "It is massive for us and it is a nice feeling.
"We had a bad result against Everton [a week ago], so to bounce back and get three points on the road against Newcastle, it's big, so we're really happy."
