Top of La Liga and already Spanish Super Cup winners, can Barcelona go all the way in the Champions League?

Barcelona’s hopes of finishing in the top eight of the Champions League to automatically qualify for the last 16 hang in the balance as they lie 15th heading into Matchday 7.

Hansi Flick’s side should be good enough to reach the knockout stages even if they are forced to go through a play-off.

Here, DAZN News assesses their pursuit of a sixth European Cup alongside their bid for more domestic glory.

Barcelona's season so far

Flick’s men have emerged as firm favourites to win La Liga as they currently top the table, although they did suffer a 2-1 loss at Real Sociedad on Sunday.

That ended the Catalans' 11-match winning streak in all competitions and left them just one point ahead of Real Madrid.

In the first El Clasico of the season, Barcelona were beaten 2-1 by their sworn enemies in the Spanish capital in late October.

Flick’s reigning champions avenged that loss by recently beating Madrid 3-2 in the final of the Spanish Super Cup and they remain a decent bet to win a 29th La Liga title.

Madrid, in contrast, have been in turmoil in recent weeks, and sacked Xabi Alonso after less than eight months in charge.

Barca have also made progress in the Copa del Rey but their priorities are retaining their domestic Spanish title and going all the way in the Champions League.

Chances of finishing in the top eight of Champions League

For a club of Barcelona’s size and stature, lieing way down in 15th place in the Champions League table is somewhat surprising.

Especially for a side who top their domestic league and reached the Champions League semi-finals last season.

They have struggled for consistency in Europe this season, winning just three of their six games so far and losing twice - including a 3-0 hammering at Chelsea.

Crucially, however, the Catalan giants have two eminently winnable games remaining which could yet propel them to a top-eight finish.

They travel to 33rd-placed Slavia Prague on Wednesday in Matchday 7 and host 24th-placed Copenhagen in Barcelona seven days later.

Currently just two points adrift of the top eight, victories in these last two games would encourage hopes of qualifying automatically for the last 16.

The Marcus Rashford conundrum – what does the future hold?

The England striker recently won his first trophy as a Barcelona player as his loan side beat Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.

Rashford, 28, was an 83rd minute substitute for two-goal hero Raphinha in Saudi Arabia, and came close to adding a fourth for Flick’s men only to drag his shot wide.

Since joining Barca from Manchester United following a falling out with former manager Ruben Amorim, he has contributed eight goals in 29 games, with around a third of his appearances coming as a substitute.

Amorim’s recent departure from Old Trafford could yet see Rashford return to his parent club when his one-year loan deal with Barca expires.

Conjecture, though, surrounds his future with conflicting reports over where Rashford may be playing his football next season

There have been claims that there is no way back for Rashford at United, with the Spaniards in favour of triggering a £26million option to make his move permanent in the summer.

Other reports claim Barcelona want to extend Rashford’s stay at Camp Nou but are unwilling to use the £26 million buy option in his loan deal due to their ongoing financial difficulties.

It has been suggested they have made contact with United to try and either negotiate a lower price or a second loan for the 2026-27 season which would include a mandatory purchase option.

Are Barca good enough to go all the way in Europe?

Nobody seems quite sure how good Barcelona can be this season, least of all themselves perhaps, but there is no denying they boast a wealth of world-class talent.

They went agonisingly close to reaching last season’s Champions League final after losing 7-6 on aggregate to Inter Milan in a classic semi-final.

Barca have not reached the final since their last success in 2015, but in players such as Brazilian sensation Raphinha, 18-year-old wonderkid Lamine Yemal and esteemed veteran Robert Lewandowski, they have a side full of with superstars.

Automatically qualifying for the last 16 would boost their chances of going deep in the tournament.

A new rule designed for this season means a higher finish gives you an easier Champions League knockout route in terms of home advantage.

Could Barca go all the way? It should certainly be fun watching them try.
