We are one month into the 2025-26 NHL season, which you can watch with NHL.TV on DAZN (excl. US and Canada).

A Stanley Cup cannot be won in a short amount of time, but it can be lost if you get off to a slow start.

And the same thing can be said for the most prestigious regular-season award, the Hart Trophy, also known as the Most Valuable Player.

Who is leading the pack at this point?

Jack Eichel

There's only one choice, and it's without a doubt Eichel. He was the NHL Player of the Month for October, leading the way with an impressive 19 points (8 goals, 11 assists) in just 11 games. His play has led the Vegas Golden Knights to a 6-2-3 start. The next closest point total on the Golden Knights is Mitch Marner with 14 (3 goals, 11 assists).

Eichel has been under MVP consideration twice in his career. The first was during the 2019-2020 season when he finished eighth while playing for the Buffalo Sabres. And then last season, he finished in fifth place as Eichel also received two first-place votes.

Cale Makar

Traditionally, the Hart Trophy goes to the best offensive player. But Makar is a defenseman, and the last player at that position to win the MVP was Chris Pronger back in 2000 when he played for the St. Louis Blues. Pronger was also the last defenseman to be in the final three to be considered for the award.

Even with Nathan MacKinnon, Makar has stood out for the Colorado Avalanche. Makar has 18 points (4 goals, 14 assists) in just 13 games, and MacKinnon has 19 (10 goals, 9 assists) in the same time frame. MacKinnon gets the love, but Makar is the straw that stirs the drink for the Central Division and Western Conference leader at 19 points.

Mark Scheifele

So far, Scheifele has 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) in 12 games to lead the NHL. Scheifele has scored points in 11 of the 12 games to help the Jets to 18 points, second in the Central Division, one point behind the Avalanche.
