The drama surrounding Micah Parsons' contract dispute has escalated this week.

First, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones raised eyebrows around the league after making comments about the dangers of extending players, referring to injuries suffered by quarterback Dak Prescott last year.

"Have you ever heard of any clubs committing to players, and then they didn't pan out after they committed to them? We have," he said.

"Just because we sign him [Parsons], doesn't mean we're going to have him. He was hurt six games last year."

Jones also gave no assurances that an extension for Parsons was imminent, stating, "There's nothing new about what we're talking about here today relative to contracts."

Then, NFL legend J.J. Watt added fuel to the fire with a post that questioned whether Jones' comments were the best way to motivate Parsons.

Parsons sent a not-so-subtle message to Jones and the Cowboys by sharing Watt's post on X.

While some may deem Parsons' actions as inflammatory in an already delicate situation, his frustrations are somewhat understandable.

He has not only been one of the most dynamic edge rushers since entering the league, but he has also been the epitome of professionalism, opting to attend voluntary and organized team activities when others in similar situations, such as Trey Hendrickson, have not.

Widely recognised as one of the best defensive talents in the NFL, Cowboys fans will be hoping the relationship doesn't devolve to the point where Parsons feels so aggrieved with the situation that he looks elsewhere for a team to call home.

Drama aside, the likelihood is that Parsons will receive an extension before we reach the start of the season in August. It will also likely be the largest non-quarterback contract ever received in the NFL.

But nothing is certain in the wake of recent developments, so until he signs on the dotted line, this storyline will be one to watch.
