If you’ve ever watched an NFL game, the quarterback (QB) is probably the first player who stood out. They touch the ball on almost every offensive snap and are usually the ones everyone is talking about once the game is over.

In this article, DAZN NFL news looks at what a QB does, what their role involves on the field, and what separates an average QB from a great one.

What is a QB?

The QB typically lines up behind the center and receives the ball when it is snapped.

The QB tends to direct the entire offense, making the position one of the most crucial in the game.

What is the Role of a QB?

The QB leads the offense and, in many respects, the entire team. They are often the face of the franchise and are expected to lead by example.

On the field, their role is to relay plays to the offense and sometimes change those plays in the heat of the moment. This requires a thorough understanding of the playbook and the ability to quickly and effectively read defenses.

On most passing plays, the QB has a list of receiving options in a specific order and decides where to throw the ball based on how the defense is covering his pass-catchers.

All of this must happen quickly, often while trying to avoid being hit by oncoming pass rushers.

On running plays, the QB usually hands the ball off and often tries to sell a play fake.

What Skills Does a Good QB Need?

The ability to throw the ball with power and accuracy is crucial, but the best QBs combine physical abilities with intangible qualities such as excellent decision-making, strong leadership skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

Tom Brady is the best example. He was far from the most physically gifted player at the position, but his feel for the game, processing skills, and competitive nature helped him become the most successful QB the league has ever seen.

Players like Lamar Jackson have shown how athleticism can also bring a new dynamic to the position. Like Randall Cunningham and Michael Vick before him, Jackson’s threat as a runner keeps defenses guessing and, when combined with many of the mental skills mentioned above, makes him one of the best QBs in the NFL.
