The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly exploring options to acquire Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, according to Ryan Burr of Big Ten Network.
The rumoured interest comes amid conflicting reports on the future of Steelers' quarterback Russell Wilson, who is set to become a free agent.
The Steelers may view Lawrence as the long-term solution for their quarterback needs that Wilson, 11 years his senior, cannot provide.
Lawrence has failed to meet the lofty expectations placed upon him when the Jaguars selected him as the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Still, at only 25 years old and in the right environment, he could develop into the player the NFL envisaged after his glittering career at Clemson.
Burr offered his opinion on the compensation required in the trade but cautioned that Pittsburgh would be unlikely to involve any picks in 2026.
The Jaguars may be open to a fresh start under new head coach Liam Coen. Finishing 4-13 in 2024 highlighted the mammoth rebuilding task ahead of them, and the additional draft picks would undoubtedly help.
However, even if the Jaguars were willing to trade Lawrence, his contract would be a significant obstacle for the Steelers to overcome.
Lawrence signed a five-year $275 million extension in 2024, and much of the money owed over the next few years is fully guaranteed.
The Steelers have some cap room to play with, and while they have other roster needs to address, they could create more space by offloading underperforming veterans such as Preston Smith.
If a trade for Lawrence materialises, it would not only be one of the biggest trades in the Steelers' history but also reshape the outlook for the 2025 NFL Draft, in which the Jaguars hold the fifth overall pick.
Stay tuned, as DAZN News will bring you the latest developments in Lawrence's rumoured trade as they unfold.
