Amanda Serrano talks key quality she'll need in female fighters to add to MVP's roster amidst women's boxing peak

In March, Jake Paul’s and Nakisa Bidarian’s Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) signed Amanda Serrano to a lifetime deal which will have her competing under the promotional umbrella for the rest of her career before segueing into becoming the Chairwoman of MVP’s women’s boxing initiatives.

While Serrano is hellbent on defeating Katie Taylor in their trilogy fight to become the new undisputed super lightweight world champion July 11, avenging a controversial unanimous loss to the Irish superstar in their November sequel, “The Real Deal” knows exactly where to begin when it comes time for her to eye women’s talent for MVP.

“One thing that matters to me is heart,” Serrano told DAZN News last week following the New York City press conference toward the buildup for Taylor-Serrano III. “I look for the heart. You have the heart, the skills can come.

“That’s how I started boxing,” the legendary seven-division world champion continued. “They saw I had heart. My first [nick]name, guys, was ‘The Waterboy.’”

“I would go crazy, I had no skills whatsoever, but obviously the skills came along. That’s what I look for. If I see a girl go in there and just give it her all, that’s all I can ask for.”

Added Paul by her side, “we’re looking for all the Bobby Bouchers out there,” giving another nod to Adam Sandler’s loveable, yet frenzied character in the 1998 hit sports comedy movie, “The Waterboy.”

During last week’s press conference, Paul vowed that “Serrano will become the highest paid female athlete in the history of all sports” on July 11, furthering MVP’s commitment to women’s boxing and narrowing the gender wage gap between female and male fighters.

“It’s the right thing to do,” Bidarian told DAZN News about MVP increasing its hand in the growth of women’s boxing, especially toward their fight purses. “It’s supply and demand, demand and supply. The growth is because they’re delivering and people want to see the product. So, as long as that’s the case, they’ll continue to have increases in pay.”

A worldwide audience of 74 million streaming on Netflix tuned in to see Taylor controversially edge Serrano via unanimous decision in their November sequel, proving there is a flourishing interest in the women’s product. That's after they became the first women headliners to sell out Madison Square Garden in their first fight back in April 2022 when Taylor claimed a split-decision win.

Despite Taylor winning by unanimous decision in November, many fans felt like Serrano did enough to win — having thrown and landed more punches — will likely only add to the intrigue with their third fight in less than three months.

The July 11 event is a fully-loaded all-women’s card which also features undisputed super featherweight world champion Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner taking on undefeated WBA interim titleholder, Spain’s Jennifer Miranda, in the co-main event.

During the press conference, Baumgardner left the door open on a possible clash with Serrano in the near future. She doubled down on that thought while speaking with DAZN News after the session, but only while noting her excitement about this burgeoning time for the women’s sweet science.

“Of course, as a fighter, as a competitor, as a challenger, we all want to fight the best and Amanda is a great opponent, she’s a great champion and she’s a pioneer of the sport,” Baumgardner said.

“So, again, we don’t know what boxing holds," she tacked on, "but I’m just happy to be a part of her historic moment July 11 at Madison Square Garden.”
