Jack Catterall has spoken out on why he decided to change his training team ahead of his next fight on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn’s rematch.

Catterall announced last month that he was moving on from long-time trainers Jamie Moore and Nigel Travers, and he has since linked up with Derrick ‘Bozy’ Ennis, the father of ex-welterweight champion Jaron, in the US.

Catterall suffered the second defeat of his career earlier this year when he was outpointed by Arnold Barboza Jr before he returned with a scrappy technical decision victory over Harlem Eubank in July.

After a couple of below-par performances, Catterall believed it was time for a change and made the difficult call to part ways with Moore and Travers.

Speaking about the split, Catterall explained on Matchroom Boxing’s Flash Knockdown podcast: “It’s something I’ve not taken lightly. I’d been stewing on it.

“I’d assessed my performances of the last couple of fights, and I think deep down it was something my gut was telling me to do. I’m probably in the final chapters of my career and I wanted to give it everything I’ve got, and I believe this move is everything.”

Catterall will act as chief support to Eubank Jr and Benn’s rematch on November 15 when he faces Ekow Essuman.

Essuman is coming off the back of a career-best win over Josh Taylor earlier this year and Catterall knows he cannot take his opponent lightly.

His training camp is underway, and Catterall is pleased with the start he has made under Bozy Ennis as he looks to work his way into title contention at welterweight.

Revealing how the link-up with Ennis came about, Catterall said: “We spent a couple of days in the gym, kind of clicked with them straight away.

“(We) had that, I wouldn’t say connection, but that understanding, that mutual respect. So, we reached out, we had the conversation, and (it’s) just coming up to a week now we’ve been here, so things are looking good.”
