Claressa Shields made history on Sunday night after becoming the first boxer to be crowned an undisputed champion in a third weight class.Â
In front of a home crowd in Flint, Michigan, Shields beat Danielle Perkins by unanimous decision and after what transpired over the 10 rounds, it was no surprise.Â
As soon as the opening bell rang out at the Dort Financial Center, Perkins' size advantage was clear to see over Shields, but this did not deter the 'GWOAT' from imposing herself with her right hand already getting her opponent's guard.Â
Perkins needed to try and gain Shields' respect, and this was attempted with a jab in round two. A fire was iginited inside Shields who replied with the dangerous right hand and the pair closed this period trading blow.Â
If it was not clear to those watching already, Shields' right hand was going to be her key weapon and it rocked Perkins in round three who then found herself on the ring canvas after her legs got tangled.Â
The one-way traffic continued with Shields controlling the tempo of the fight safely in the knowledge that Perkins posed very little threat.Â
There were numerous moments from rounds four to nine where Shields continued to trouble her opponent, and if it was not for the size difference, there was a strong chance a knockout could have been coming.Â
Heading into the tenth and final round, the electric crowd in Flint was preparing to celebrate another historic achievement for the 'GWOAT', and Shields made sure to end the fight with a bang.Â
As the final few seconds ticked away, Shields pounced on Perkins, ducking under a straight left to land a thumping overhand right which was enough to put Perkins on the floor.Â
Perkins was able to meet the referee's count, but the writing was on the wall as the final bell brought this one-sided affair to a close.Â
Shields was declared the winner on all three judges' scorecards with scores of 100-89, 99-90 and 97-92, and was crowned the undisputed women's champion at heavyweight.Â
