Colm Murphy ready for huge jump against idol turned rival Jono Carroll

Dickens vs. Cacace: Subscribe to watch - Saturday

Colm Murphy may look like an assuming person outside of the ring with his ruffled hair and glasses, but inside it, he is an exciting prospect.

Undefeated in his 16 professional bouts, Murphy will open DAZN’s broadcast of Jazza Dickens vs. Anthony Cacace on Saturday night.

In the opposite corner will be Irish veteran Jono Carroll, a fighter who has experienced everything boxing has to offer.

Ultimate Tier - heavyweight season

For Murphy, he finds himself in a unique position, facing an opponent who he watched and proved to be an inspiration.

“It’s crazy to be honest, but it’s a testament to how hard I’ve worked to get here,” Murphy told DAZN News.

“I have given myself the best opportunity to beat Jono Carroll, so this was the right time to take this fight.”

Murhphy ready to take 'huge jump' against Carroll

The fight card, which is being staged in Dublin, is a showcase of the best Irish boxing has to offer.

Exciting heavyweight prospect Adam Olaniyan will make his professional debut, while Pierce O’Leary looks to take another step towards becoming the country’s next boxing star against former IBO champion Maxi Hughes.

The magnitude of the occasion has dawned on Murphy, who currently, is not getting much attention in the build-up. Instead, it’s his opponent Carrol as a result of being a well known name amongst many fight fans.

However, opening the main card provides the perfect opportunity for Murphy to make an early statement, and make the huge leap to compete with more established operators.

“It’s a huge card to get yourself out there, it’s probably the biggest card in Ireland for at least a year or so.

“There is going to be a lot of eyes on the night. This is a huge platform if you want to be fighting in Saudi further down the line and get on the even bigger shows.

“I’ll have to take it one step at a time; this fight is a huge jump up.

“It’s the stepping stones you need to take at my age.”

From a gentle person to a destructive fighter

On the surface, Carroll looks more like the man cut out to fight rather than Murphy.

Known as ‘Posh Boy’, Murphy is someone who has not experienced the tough upbringings many boxers endure en-route to the top.

This is something Murphy embraces, telling DAZN News that while he may project a calm, unassuming presence, once the bell goes, he’s a destructive force, something he likened to a notorious character from English literature.

“I’m completely different. I’m myself, I don’t have to be the stereotypical fighter, brash, all confidence and swagger,” Murphy said.

“I’m pretty gentle, if somebody asked me for help, I’d help them. I try to give back to my community and help people.

“There’s Lennie from ‘Of Mice and Men’, he was gentle, but he had the ability to cause great destruction, that’s like me in the ring when I fight.”
