Many world champions have earned their stripes at domestic level before winning major honours, with boxers in Britain expected to work their way up their ranks.

Anthony Joshua, Lennox Lewis, Tyson Fury, and Joe Calzaghe are just a handful of British champions that went on to conquer the world.

The Lonsdale belt is one of the most-prized straps in British boxing, with over 100 years of history behind the title.

Here is the complete list of current British champions, and the status of divisions without belt holders.

Heavyweight – vacant (Jeamie TKV v Frazer Clarke ordered)

David Adeleye claimed the vacant heavyweight strap earlier this year with a controversial victory over Jeamie TKV in April. After the referee called a break, Adeleye appeared to catch TKV off guard with a hook, leading to his opponent’s downfall.

Knocked down to the canvas shortly after, TKV managed to get back to his feet, but the fight was quickly ended with the fighter clearly disoriented. Off the back of the controversy the BBBofC ordered an immediate rematch, and whilst Queensberry quickly secured the purse bid, Adeleye ultimately chose to vacate the belt to set up a fight with Filip Hrgovic

TKV remains in contention for the once-again vacant title, with Dave Allen briefly mentioned as a potential opponent. However, the BBBofC’s latest circular has confirmed that TKV will face Frazer Clarke for the British heavyweight strap later this year, on a show promoted by BOXXER.

Cruiserweight – Viddal Riley

The same night Adeleye earned the heavyweight British title, Viddal Riley secured the Lonsdale belt at 200lbs. He comfortably dispatched reigning champion Cheavon Clarke by unanimous decision on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr’s victory over Conor Benn

Currently there are no plans for Riley’s next fight, but he has mentioned fellow rising star Aloys Junior as a potential opponent for the first defence of his new title. The BBBofC has not ordered a title fight in the division at the time of writing.

Light heavyweight – Lewis Edmondson

Lewis Edmondson’s career took a bump last time out, losing his unbeaten record to Ukrainian prospect Daniel Lapin on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk’s victory over Daniel Dubois at Wembley.

Edmondson had been in talks to fight long-term rival Ezra Taylor before taking the Lapin fight, with the pair being spotted ringside at each other’s bouts. That fight has been revisited, with Queensberry Promotions set to organise the bout.

However, a date and venue has yet to be confirmed.

Super middleweight – Callum Simpson

Callum Simpson won his British super middleweight title in August 2024 but has only defended his belt once despite fighting three times already in 2025. Now European champion, the BBBofC is currently allowing Simpson to pursue a defence of his European Boxing Union (EBU) crown against Kevin Lele Sadjo.

Middleweight – Kieron Conway

There could be a new holder of the Lonsdale belt at middleweight, with Kieron Conway making a voluntary defence against George Liddard at York Hall, the headline event of a show live on DAZN on Friday, October 17.

It will be Conway’s first defence of the title he earned back in May, defeating George Warburton at the Copper Box on the same card that Liddard also fought on.

The winner of that contest will face the victor of Shakiel Thompson and Brad Pauls, a final eliminator ordered by the BBBofC. Interested promoters have until September 10 to make their purse bids, whilst the fight must be staged by December.

Super welterweight – Vacant (Sam Gilley vs Ishmael Davis ordered)

The title at 154lbs is currently vacant, but two potential champions have been ordered to fight each other. Matchroom Boxing will organise a bout between Sam Gilley, the current Commonwealth super welterweight champion, and Ishmael Davis.

Gilley had been set to face Louis Greene for the vacant title back in June, only for his former opponent to withdraw due to a contract dispute.

Welterweight – Conah Walker

Conah Walker is currently relaxing after defending his welterweight British title for the first time, knocking out Liam Taylor in the seventh-round of their contest in Birmingham at the end of June.

The BBBofC has not ordered a mandatory defence, nor are there any eliminators currently scheduled.

Super lightweight – Jack Rafferty

While the welterweight picture for the British title is quite dormant, the super-lightweight landscape has been mapped out by the BBBofC.

Jack Rafferty defended his British and Commowealth titles against Mark Chamberlain in Altrincham, a majority decision draw ensuring that 'The Demolition Man' remained in possession of the belts.

The two have already spoken about a rematch, but it remains to be seen if it will be ordered by the BBBofC.

Away from the title, there are two eliminators currently set up. Bradley Townsend and Billy Allington will fight each other on a card organised by promoter Mark Neilson, with a date and venue yet to be set.

English super lightweight champion Yaser Al Ghena has been slated to take on Mykey-Lee Broughton on Sunday, September 7, live on DAZN, in another eliminator clash.

Lightweight – Vacant (Regan Glackin v Louie O’Doherty ordered)

Sam Noakes has recently vacated his belt to pursue the vacant World Boxing Organisation (WBO) world title against Abdullah Mason. Wily promoter Frank Warren sensed an opportunity, requesting Regan Glackin to take on Louie O’Doherty on the undercard of Nathaniel Collins’ clash with Cristobal Lorente on Saturday October 4, live on DAZN.

Super featherweight – Ryan Garner

Ryan Garner added the British super-featherweight crown to his collection by beating Reece Bellotti last month, having entered the contest with the European belt at 130lbs.

Already the World Boxing Council (WBC) international champion, it is unclear whether Garner’s world title ambitions will allow him to make a defence of his new title.

Nathan Howells and Conor McIntosh have been ordered to face each other in a final eliminator set for the Cardiff Vale Arena on Saturday, September 13.

Featherweight – Vacant (Rhys Edwards v Gulraj Power ordered)

The featherweight strap at 126lbs has changed hands twice already this year, with Nathaniel Collins first vacating the Lonsdale belt in January after no defences in over 13 months.

Zak Miller took on Masood Abdullah for the vacant title in February, also taking his opponent’s Commonwealth strap via majority decision. However, Miller has also vacated his belt, in order to take on Leon Woodstock on the undercard of Rafferty-Chamberlain.

As such, the belt is now up for grabs again. Rhys Edwards and Gulraj Powar have been ordered to fight for the vacant title, with purse bids due by September 10, and the fight expected to be held before the end of December.

Super Bantamweight – Vacant (Peter McGrail v Dylan Arbuckle ordered)

Peter McGrail has been ordered to face Dylan Arbuckle in a final eliminator, but both fighters have requested to postpone purse talks for one month.

Bantamweight – Andrew Cain

Andrew Cain is another fighter not currently under pressure from the BBBofC to organise a defence of his British title, having successfully fended off Charlie Edwards in March.

Ranked at number three by the WBC, Cain’s sights might be set on world-level fights – potentially leading to the Scouser vacating in the not-to-so distant future.

A final eliminator has been ordered between Joshua John and Lennon Mulligan, with purse bids again postponed by a month after requests from both fighters.

Super Flyweight – Brandon Daord

Brandon Daord is another Liverpudlian with a British title that is not currently scheduled to defend his belt. Daord won his Lonsdale belt in February, defeating Matt McHale, but currently there are no plans for a defence for the 28-year-old.

Flyweight – vacant (Harvey Horn v Paul Roberts ordered)

The flyweight version of the Lonsdale belt is currently without a holder after Jay Harris retired from the sport. The 35-year-old held both the British and Commonwealth straps at 112lbs but found opportunities hard to come by, quitting the sweet science in February.

Dennis Hobson will arrange a fight between Harvey Horn and Paul Roberts in Sheffield on Saturday, October 4, to crown a new champion at flyweight.

Divisions without titles

Currently there are three divisions that the BBBofC do not crown champions for – bridgerweight, light flyweight, and strawweight.

Bridgerweight is a fledgling division, only recognised by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA). Wider adoption for the 220lbs weight has yet to occur, with the BBBofC yet to organise the division in the United Kingdom.

At the other end of the spectrum, the BBBofC’s smallest weight they award titles for is flyweight.

Although all four sanctioning bodies crown champions at both 108lbs and 105lbs, there is no Lonsdale belt for light flyweights or strawweights.
