Ring III took place on Saturday night from Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, N.Y., live on DAZN PPV with a double main event as Edgar Berlanga fought Hamzah Sheeraz and the co-feature had Shakur Stevenson (23-0, 11 KOs) putting the WBC Lightweight championship at stake against William Zepeda (33-0, 27 KOs).
After a slow start to the main event, Sheeraz (22-0-1, 18 KOs) put on a show in the fourth round by dropping Berlanga twice at the end of the stanza. To Berlanga's credit, he showed a ton of heart in getting back to his feet on both occasions. An argument could be made that you let Berlanga continue since he did get dropped in his fight with Canelo Alvarez in September. The referee did that and let the native of New York go to the fifth round.
Sheeraz came out firing to begin the fifth. He went right at Berlanga. The 26-year-old hit a laser right hand, followed by a left hook to drop Berlanga for the third time and end his night. Sheeraz now becomes the mandatory challenger for the WBO super middleweight title, which is currently held by Alvarez, who faces Terence Crawford on Sept. 13. If Alvarez gets past Crawford, Sheeraz welcomes a fight with boxing's biggest star.
"Canelo's always been a hero of mine," Sheeraz tells Mike Coppinger in his post-fight interview. "Even for my name to be mentioned in the same sentence as his, that's a great achievement. Listen, if I do get the opportunity to fight him, it won't be one of those where I try to nick it on points. I would stand in the middle with him and have it out with him, and whoever lands first, I suppose, they get knocked out."
Berlanga (23-2, 18 KOs) has now lost two of his last three fights and was just stopped for the first time in his career.
Before that, Stevenson (24-0, 11 KOs) didn't run like Jerry and fought one of the best fights of his career by out-gunning Zepeda to retain the belt. He faced adversity from an aggressive Zepeda. But he bit down on the mouthpiece and unloaded the arsenal in eventually wearing down the durable Zepeda with one power shot after another in the pocket to remain undefeated and hand Zepeda (33-1, 27 KOs) the first loss of his career.
Here is what happened at Berlanga vs. Sheeraz and Stevenson vs. Zepeda.
