Carl Froch and Tony Bellew were recently involved in a jovial argument when discussing the legitimacy of Chris Eubank Jr’s upcoming rematch with Conor Benn this weekend , live only on DAZN.
The bitter rivals squared off earlier this year in a thrilling battle that saw a strong finish from Eubank Jr. earn him the plaudits of all three judges on the scorecards.
Due to the quality of the bout and how well it was received, the pair are now set to mirror their fathers once more by going at it for a second time.
It is a fight that has the entire fight world buzzing, but Froch, a former world champion at super-middleweight, believes that the feud may have peaked in their first fight.
Filled with drama, action, the return of Chris Eubank Snr, and an incredible atmosphere, Eubank Jr. vs Benn was one of the sporting moments of 2025, and it is hoped by organisers of the rematch that the sequel can be equally as engaging.
Froch, Bellew, and George Groves recently sat down with selected members of the media to discuss the Eubank Jr. vs. Benn rematch, and the fight has stirred up some interesting debate between the ex-fighters.
“It might be a bit controversial to say this. I don’t think it’s a fight that needs to happen,” said Froch when asked about the rematch at a press event hosted by Sportscasting.com.
“I think we’ve seen it. We’ve seen the fight. It was great. The right man won. You kind of put it to bed. No world titles. They’ve both got lost on the records. What’s at stake? Nothing. The guys are just doing it for a load of money.”
Bellew immediately cut in and defended the contest due to the level of entertainment and action that was on display in the original encounter.
“Have you seen a fight that was that good last year or this year?” asked the Liverpool man, a former ruler at cruiserweight.
"Well, why not see it again? It’s like saying, why don’t Micky Ward Vs Arturo Gatti keep fighting. The fight was great, and we want to see it again."
Froch kept on pushing his point by insisting that Gatti and Ward were operating at a different level to this weekend’s combatants
“Yeah, but that’s a different level. Because Micky Ward and Arturo Gatti were far more superior compared to this fight.
Bellew fired back declaring his admiration for Ward before reminding Froch of the Lowell man’s record before Gatti, “Micky Ward was a full-blown journeyman at one stage in his career. A full-blown journeyman. He’s got so many losses on his record. Micky Ward became a living legend by what he’d done with Arturo Gatti. Before Arturo Gatti. He was not a legend.”
The debate was swiftly shut down by Froch who thanked his former sparring partner for the story.
