The two-weight world champion may not return to the ring as soon as many had hoped.

Gervonta 'Tank' Davis has revealed he has suffered some form of hand injury while training in preparation for his return to the boxing ring.

Davis last appeared on Halloween night with an emphatic sixth-round blast of Mexico's Leo Santa Cruz at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Though his first assignment of 2021 had not yet been confirmed, there was a great degree of anticipation for the reigning WBA champion at both lightweight and super-featherweight to step between the ropes against fellow undefeated divisional rivals such as Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney or unified lightweight king Teofimo Lopez.

If one of those big bouts was Tank's intended next bout, however, it may take a little longer to get over the finish line now.

"I hurt my hand sparring today," Davis tweeted.

When one fan responded to the tweet accusing the American of wanting to avoid "the smoke" of the aforementioned big names, Tank quote tweeted him and responded: "I am the smoke."

Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, who handles Davis' career, had claimed to Boxing Scene days prior that his fighter will have a high-profile year.

“Gervonta is going to fight in the biggest fights possible in 2021," he said. "He wants to fight anyone that we put in front of him. He’s willing to fight anybody.

“It’s great for the sport that [all of the 135 pounders] want to fight one another. A fight with Tank and Ryan will be the biggest fight in the sport, period. It’s not even close.

“Garcia beat a very good fighter in Luke Campbell. He went through a little adversity in the fight and it just shows you what he is made of. He’s made it known to the world that he wants to fight Tank, and that’s a great thing.

"It’s a tremendous matchup. Tank is the top dog and biggest name at 130 and 135 pounds. He’s the cash cow.

“I don’t want to get into details about anything because the quickest way to not make a fight is to talk about it before you can even get it done.

“We’ve been extremely successful putting on the biggest events in the history of the sport by not talking about it in the public prior to it happening. We’ll let all of the other promoters do that kind of stuff.

"We work behind the scenes and execute. I don’t want to speculate or do anything like that. Both Gervonta and Ryan want to fight each other, and I will leave it at that.

"We want to make the biggest fights possible. Mayweather Promotions does not have a problem working with anybody. We’re calling our shots, though.”
