Leigh Wood moves towards potential Nottingham Forest stadium fight following stunning Josh Warrington winDAZN
Leigh Wood is still world champion.

Leigh Wood produced another miraculous finish to retain his WBA featherweight title with a stunning seventh round stoppage against Josh Warrington.

A frenzied crowd in Sheffield got behind both men from the outset but it was the Nottingham supporters of Wood who went home happiest after their man came from behind to keep his world belt.

Warrington was relentless from the outset, and he built a huge lead on the scorecard as he repeatedly breached Wood’s defence.

The Leeds fighter entered the ring in poor form but for long periods it appeared that he was going to become world champion for a third time as he was well ahead with the ringside judges.

In the seventh session, Warrington was once again relentless but a lapse in concentration was exploited by Wood as he managed to hurt his domestic rival.

Warrington went down and even though he beat the count and the bell had sounded to end the round, the referee called the fight off and didn’t allow him the opportunity to have the minute’s rest.

A decision that was perhaps a little harsh.

Following wild celebrations in the Wood corner, Eddie Hearn, Wood’s promoter, stated that he wants to take his man to Nottingham Forest’s City Ground for a fight next year.
