Teofimo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson came face to face for the first time earlier this week as they made their January 31 battle official at a New York City press conference.

The pound for pound pair, who are both aiming to be face of face of American boxing, both have their backers heading into next month’s clash and they did not hold back as they constantly exchanged verbal barbs.

Stevenson will be making the jump to super-lightweight after starting his career at featherweight, and victory against Lopez will see him become a world champion in a fourth weight class.

In Lopez, the Newark native will be coming across a fighter who seemingly rises to the occasion after looking dominant in memorable wins over Vasiliy Lomachenko and Josh Taylor.

Stevenson begins the fight favourite as he protects an unbeaten record against some standout names, but one ex-fighter believes that Lopez’s size will be a significant factor.

James Toney moved through many weight classes at his peak as he collected numerous world titles during his illustrious career.

Now retired, the former rival of Roy Jones Jr. is quick to offer an opinion on the sport he once dominated, and he thinks that Lopez can get the job done when the pair finally meet at Madison Square Garden.

“Another great fight. Teo’s too big for him. Both fighters have extraordinary skills,” said Toney when speaking to Mill City Boxing

“It’s gonna be a great fight as long as it lasts. I see Teo stopping him late if it happens. If not, Shakur runs around the ring for 12 rounds, and it’ll be a boring ass fight.”
