How the NFL inspired Terence Crawford's corner in Canelo Alvarez win

In boxing fights with thousands of people in attendance, staying calm is difficult.

This is why the corner is paramount for any boxer inside the ring to stay composed and for Terence Crawford earlier this month, it was vital.

Facing undisputed super middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, in Las Vegas, on Mexican Independence Day weekend, stepping up in weight, 'Bud' had an uphill task in spoiling the party for the thousands of devoted Mexicans who made the trip to see their sporting god.

Crawford, however, made it look easy, toying with the Mexican as he struggled to gain any foothold in the fight at Allegiant Stadium and saw the American rightfully get the win by unanimous decision

Obviously, Crawford's talent inside the ring has to be commended; the performance cemented him as a pound-for-pound great and, in the eyes of some, the new king sitting atop the often-debated pound-for-pound rankings.

But it's also Crawford's corner, led by Brian 'Bo Mac' McIntyre, which should be praised for how they conducted themselves during what was the biggest fight of 'Bud's' career.

Sometimes, when a fight is not going in a favourable direction, it can lead to chaos within a training team with multiple voices trying to give the fighter instructions.

Instead, McIntyre keeps a regimented structure to his team and likened it to the NFL when it comes to how they conducted themselves.

"I run the corner, I run the gym with coaches just like a football team," McIntyre told talkBOXING

"You got the defensive coordinator, you got the offensive coordinator, the linebacker coach, the same thing that they do, we do. We break the fight down in the corner."

McIntyre also revealed that he often steps back to give other members of his coaching team the chance to work the corner and judge Crawford's overall performance.

"While we are in the gym, I pull back and get the guys to work the corner. I’m going to score the round and see how you perform. I’ll give you the thumbs up or thumbs down if I think you’ve won that round," he continued.

"Esau, Red or Bernie, they are in there talking, they are in there giving instructions. If there is ever a time where one of us is not there, or I’m not there myself, then everything runs smooth."

It will be no surprise if McIntyre opts for a similar approach when he leads Chris Eubank Jr into his rematch with Conor Benn on November 15, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium live on DAZN

The McIntyre-Eubank Jr partnership already has one win under their belt after the American steered Eubank Jr to a stoppage win against Liam Smith in their own rematch two years ago.
