Just a few weeks away from putting his WBC junior middleweight title on the line in a highly-anticipated rematch against Tim Tszyu in Las Vegas on July 19, Sebastian Fundora knows the 154-pound weight class has suddenly become one of the most intriguing divisions in boxing.
A week after Fundora runs it back with Tszyu, undefeated Puerto Rican fighter Xander Zayas will clash with Jorge Garcia in New York City with the vacant WBO championship up for grabs.
Unified welterweight world champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis will also be moving up to 154 pounds, making the division all the more splashy.
So if successful as he was with a split-decision win over Tszyu in their first meeting back in March 2024, would Fundora want to fight Zayas or Ennis?
DAZN News asked ‘The Towering Inferno’ just that recently and Fundora is up for either bout.
“Whoever comes,” Fundora said. “Whoever is the better decision at the time.
“Ennis is a champion, he’s already a champion, a unified champion, so we’ll see,” he continued weighing. “Zayas has a championship fight a week after us.
“Whoever looks nice.”
Zayas (21-0, 13 knockouts) was the mandatory challenger for Fundora (22-1-1, 14 knockouts) but the latter’s decision to go after the Tszyu rematch instead, forced the WBO to vacate the title, as reported by Ring Magazine.
While Fundora would welcome smoke with either Zayas or Ennis, stylistically he leans to one.
“Maybe the Ennis fight,” Fundora said, “because he’s already a unified champion and established already.”
Such a bout would put ‘The Towering Inferno’ — all 6-foot-6 of him with a prodding praying mantis-like jab and wicked combinations — against the tremendous sweet science skills of ‘Boots.’
But for either fight to pan out, Fundora must first avoid a letdown against Tszyu (25-2, 18 KOs), who snapped a two-fight skid by producing a fourth-round TKO of Joseph Spencer in April.
“I think it would be as big as the last one,” Fundora stated about what a second win over Tszyu would mean. “Just beating him again as a former champion just cements my career at 154 a lot more.”
Then, the calls for a fight against Zayas or Ennis could take shape.
