Whyte, a former world title challenger who has shared the ring with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, had been expected to provide Itauma with some much needed rounds.
Instead, the contest was over just seconds after it started as Itauma immediately went on the front foot with Whyte having no answer to the attacks he was under.
After being floored, Whyte made it back to his feet, but after being on unsteady legs, the referee made an intervention.
In the aftermath of the fight, the buzz around Itauma is continuing to grow and he has now been linked to every big name in the division.
That includes a potential showdown with undisputed ruler, Oleksandr Usyk, but with Itauma still only being 20 years of age, some within his team are expressing caution.
Tony Bellew, a big admirer of Itauma and a former rival of Usyk, likes what he has seen from the heavyweight prospect so far, but has revealed two names that Itauma should be wary of.
“There's nobody in the world right now, apart from Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury who Itauma couldn't pick holes in and beat,” said Bellew when speaking to Esportsbets.com.
“Apart from those two, he's gonna nail anyone. He's gonna catch anyone. The big fact is, will they nail him first?
“Only Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury are capable of making him miss and making him pay. All the other fighters in the division, he will catch them.”
