Troy Williamson set to miss out on world title opportunity after rematch called

Troy Williamson will fulfil his obligation to face Callum Simpson in a rematch rather than challenge for the IBF super-middleweight title next.

The Briton scored a tenth-round victory against his domestic rival in Leeds last month to upend the pecking order with dramatic results.

Williamson subsequently found himself in the mix for a shot at the vacant IBF crown against Osleys Iglesias after Terence Crawford's retirement.

Now, however, it appears that the star will face Simpson for a second time instead after BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom exercised their clause.

The decision offers an immediate chance for the latter to claim his revenge, though it does mean that both men will likely contest without a title.

Williamson is likely to be stripped of the European crown thanks to rules around direct rematches, which would be breached by a second dance.

Furthermore, an immediate follow-up clash rules out the chance of challenging Iglesias and potentially setting up a world title clash down the line.

It comes after Williamson said he would be happy to take the rematch with Simpson next, while admitting he wanted it in March or April by preference.
