Jake Wyllie was victorious on Saturday when he overcame Youssef Dib in a scrappy affair at Brisbane's Fortitude Music Hall.

After a courageous display against George Kambosos Jr in March, Wyllie was looking to build on this showing with an opponent who claimed he was levels above Wyllie despite coming into this fight on the back of a two-fight losing streak.

As expected, Wyllie was on the front foot and applying pressure to Dib whose jab kept his Australian rival at a safe distance.

Dib’s shots were cleaner in the first two rounds, but Wyllie is never afraid to step into the fire and trade. Round two saw a Wyllie body shot rock Dib who bounced back with a right hand as the action began to intensify in Brisbane.

While Wyllie and Dib going toe-to-toe was great to see, technique began to vanish with the referee having to ask both men to ‘box’ in the third. This reset provided promising moments with Dib landing a left-right combination before Wyllie backed his opponent on to the ropes before throwing a successful right hand.

It looked like Wyllie was in control for the rest of the session, but the Australian was rocked by a Dib right hand on the bell.

This scrappy affair saw both men in a heap on the ring canvas in the fourth with Dib beginning to show signs of damage on his rib cage as a result of Wyllie’s body assault.

Wyllie provided the standout moment in round five with a clubbing right hand which made Dib reluctant to engage. While he was willing to venture towards his opponent, he doing so without the same positive mindset in the earlier rounds.

Dib gained more confidence after a brief wobble and reverted back to his jab in the seventh which gave him plenty of success at the start of the fight.

A quick one-two combination from Dib ended a back and forth in round nine, setting up a tense tenth and final session to the contest which was proving difficult to score.

Wyllie gave it one last push with his high-pressure approach with Dib trying to use his crafty movement to evade the punches coming his way. Both men continued to land and gave it their all until the final bell brought this scrappy encounter to an end.

With scores of 98-92, 98-92 and 97-94, all three ringside judges gave the win to Wyllie with his front foot tactics likely getting the attention of the scoring officials.

The win over Dib now moves Wyllie to a 17-2 professional record with 16 of those wins coming by way of knockout.

Former WBC featherweight champion Skye Nicolson made it two wins from two since moving down to super bantamweight against Urvashi Singh.

From the opening bell Nicolson’s height advantage over Singh was clear to see and she used it to her advantage. Her punches had an extra ‘pop’ which was something Nicolson had been working on with her trainers Eddie Lam and Bradley Skeete.

The stoppage came in round two when a Nicolson left hook to the body rendered Singh unable to continue which completed a successful Brisbane homecoming.
