The New York Islanders' worst fears have occurred as forward Kyle Palmieri suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and is out six to eight months, which puts him out for the remainder of the season.
Palmieri suffered the horrific injury when he got all tangled up against the board with the Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Jamie Drysdale while battling for the puck. Instead of just going to the sidelines or staying down, Palmieri got up, stole the puck from defenseman Emil Andrae, and then made a pass to Jonathan Drouin, who then set up Emil Heineman for a goal, which netted Palmieri an assist.
The 34-year-old was off to a good start with his new team with he signed a two-year contract in May. Before the season-ending injury, Palmieri was second on the Islanders with 18 points (6 goals, 12 assists) in 25 games of action.
"What a gutsy effort for him on that," captain Anders Lee said to reporters after the game. "Going through a lot of pain, he's one of the toughest teammates that I know. Takes a lot for him to feel pain and get keeled over, but you can also see how strong he is to battle through and make a huge play."
