We just flipped the calendar to 2026, and the NHL season is in full gear, which you can watch with NHL.TV on DAZN (excl. US and Canada).

A Stanley Cup cannot be won in a short amount of time, but it can be lost if you get off to a slow start.

And the same thing can be said for the most prestigious regular-season award, the Hart Trophy, also known as the Most Valuable Player.

Who is leading the pack at this point?

Nathan McKinnon

There's only one choice, and it's without a doubt McKinnon, who is the engine behind the best team in the NHL, the Colorado Avalanche. He leads the league in points and in goals to lead the team, whose only lost three times in regulation in just 41 games.

If McKinnon can continue the run that he's on, then the 2023-24 MVP will bring home the trophy for the second time.

Connor McDavid

While McKinnon is off to a great start, the best player in the NHL is starting to make up ground and tighten the race as he looks for his fourth MVP award.. McDavid had an unbelievable month of December by scoring the most points by a player in a month since Mario Lemieux (34 points in 14 games) in 1995.

McDavid scored 34 points in 15 games and moved the Edmonton Oilers from sixth to first place in the Pacific Division. He's now second in the league in points (72), right behind McKinnon. Like McKinnon, the Oilers will go as far as McDavid can take them.

Macklin Celebrini

Celebrini is third in the league in points (63) with only McKinnon and McDavid in front of him. The next highest point total on the San Jose Sharks is Will Smith with 29. The Sharks are right on the outside looking in for the playoffs as they are ninth in the Western Conference. If they can get in and Celebrini continues this pace, he should definitely get serious consideration.
