He said, "It's an interesting one and it's a bit like the new format for the Champions League. I'm not too sure until I see it. The jury's out, effectively.
"When the first whistle blows, I'll be sitting watching and I really hope, I genuinely hope that the teams take it seriously. I do.
"I think it might be one of these tournaments that might be a slow burner, I can see that.
"Then the whole thing might just ignite and take off. I think the tournament will be a success, but I think it'll be a slow burner."

However, when pushed for who will be lifting the trophy come the end of the tournament, McCoist can't look past two familiar European heavyweights.
"As for your favourites, it will be the obvious ones. Maybe not so much Man City in the current climate, to be honest with you. I'd maybe remove them from favouritism.
"So, in terms of favourites, I think it would go for your Real Madrid and Bayern Munich teams."
