Ange Postecoglou delighted in Tottenham Hotspur's tenacity after their 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League Final ended a generational trophy drought.
Brennan Johnson's scrappy first-half finish, aided by a deflection off Luke Shaw amid a tangle near the post, proved enough for victory at San Mames Stadium on Wednesday.
With both teams recording their worst domestic campaigns for generations, this all-Premier League affair offered one last chance for salvation and European football next year.
But after bearing the brunt of criticism for his side's slide down the table this term, Postecoglou delivered on his famed promise of sophomore season success with joy in Bilbao.
The Australian famously promised to deliver a trophy in his second year in north London, and does so with their first honour since they won the 2008 League Cup Final.
"I know what it means for this football club," he told TNT Sports. "Unfortunately, the longer it goes on, the harder it becomes to break that cycle.
"It comes down to moments. We could have been better in transition today, but I always felt comfortable that if we got ahead, we could negate what they would throw at us.
"It wasn't me boasting, it was me making a declaration [I win things in my second year]. I know our league form has been terrible.
"But us finishing third wasn't going to change this football club. The only thing that was going to change this football club was us winning something.
"If I fell short, I was happy to cop it. But that was my ambition. I could say that, and I was prepared to wear it if it didn't happen. I don't feel like I've completed a job here."
