Son Heung-min says Tottenham's performance in a 1-0 loss to AZ Alkmaar is a "wake-up call" as the Premier League outfit battle to save their UEFA Europa League campaign.

Spurs were second-best at the AFAS Stadion, with AZ creating more chances and finishing with a higher expected goals (xG) than the visitors.

Yet it was Tottenham who scored the game's only goal, as midfielder Lucas Bergvall sliced the ball into his own team's net in the 18th minute to give the Dutch side the victory.

The own goal was emblematic of Tottenham's poor play throughout the match, and club captain Son lamented the display from his side in his post-match comments.

"It's nowhere near where we should perform," he told TNT Sports. "It was very disappointing that we performed like this, including me.

"It's a big wake-up call because next week is the biggest game of the season. I really don't think there was too much caution.

"It's always tough to play away in the Europa League. We didn't create anything in the first half, sloppiness, not performing the way we should.

"Everyone is very disappointed about the individual performance and the team performance, we have to look at ourselves.

"There is no excuses, we were not good enough. It's just 1-0, it's still not finished, and next week we have to be much better."

Tottenham and AZ will reconvene in North London for the second leg next week.
