Location

Dortmund is the third-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, a state in Germany that borders the Netherlands and Belgium to the west.

Borussia Dortmund’s famed Signal Iduna Park (also known as the Westfalenstadion) sits in the heart of the city and holds over 80,000 fans in one of the most intimidating environments in Europe.

Origin

The club was founded in late 1909 as a breakaway team from a local church, and it found modest success regionally until breaking through following World War II with the league and cup double in 1947. They would go on to win a record six titles in the Oberliga West, which served as a precursor to the Bundesliga.

It would take Borussia Dortmund more than three decades to claim their first Bundesliga title, as the club claimed the first of back-to-back league crowns in 1994-95. They parlayed that into near-immediate success in the UEFA Champions League, winning their only title thus far in the 1996-97 season.
