Chelsea's run of good form continued on Wednesday in the Champions League as they steamrolled visiting Ajax 5-1, and Enzo Maresca believes his side could have won by even more.
The Blues took full advantage of an early red card to Ajax's Kenneth Taylor, scoring four goals before halftime against the shell-shocked side from Amsterdam. It was the first time Ajax had allowed four goals in the opening 45 minutes of a European match in over 67 years, and Chelsea were not done there as they added their fifth and final goal of the evening just two minutes into the second half.
After that, the Londoners were unlucky to not add to their inflated tally as they poured nine shots on target (from 17 total attempts) but had to settle for the four-goal margin at a jubilant Stamford Bridge.
Maresca echoed the triumphant mood after the match, even if he felt that Chelsea left some goals on the table.
"Very happy about the game," the Chelsea manager told UEFA. "We started quite well. The red card changed the game.
"We played a good game. We scored five goals and could have scored more!"
Chelsea have had to play several games ths season with 10 players, so Maresca empathized with Ajax despite expressing pleasure with the result.
"To play with 10 players is difficult. We know that well this season."
