Matchday 27 of the Premier League takes place in midweek, and one of the matches features Chelsea vs Southampton.

Chelsea are battling for a Champions League spot but have slipped to seventh place after three losses in their last four games, the most recent of which was a defeat at Aston Villa.

Now they return home to welcome Southampton, who are destined for a return to the Championship unless something miraculous happens over the next few months.

The Saints have just nine points from 26 matches, and have lost four of their last five.

Here's what you need to know about Chelsea and Southampton ahead of their match.

Chelsea vs. Southampton: What the managers are saying

Enzo Maresca, Chelsea

(via Chelsea)

"From now on, every game and team is playing for something. They will all be tough matches.

"I really think that [it could be tricky vs Southampton]. It's football. I am not saying that for a message, I really believe every game is a tricky game. The differences are so tiny. We need to be focused on how we win the game.

"We asked for a better performance [than Brighton], and the performance was there. We didn't deserve the final result [vs Aston Villa], but we need to accept that in this moment it's not enough, we need to find something extra to get results.

"Our duty is to prepare every game to win. From now on, we have 12 games to go and no doubt they are all big games for us."

Ivan Juric, Southampton

(via BBC)

"They lost their last game but there is a huge difference between us. They are an incredible team with incredible players. They have had two bad results but they are great, so we have to play well."

"It's not easy at the moment. It is much easier for them than it is for us because they have 20 great players. So if they are missing one player, they can just replace them - so it's a completely different situation to us."

Chelsea vs. Southampton: Prediction

Even Southampton's manager has seemingly given up on this season, and the gulf in class between these sides has already been shown.

Prediction: Chelsea 3-0 Southampton
