'Disappointed' Ruben Amorim not blaming André Onana for Manchester United draw at Lyon

André Onana's week just got a little bit tougher after the Manchester United goalkeeper committed a pair of costly errors that led to goals as the Red Devils drew 2-2 with hosts Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie on Thursday, but Ruben Amorim was not placing the blame on his beleagured 'keeper.

Speaking to TNT Sports moments after the final whistle, Amorim expressed disappointment at the result.

"We are really disappointed," the United manager said. "We should have taken a one-goal advantage to the next game but we have the next game at home - we will try to win that game."

While Amorim's frustration was evident, he stopped short of blaming Onana for the let-down.

"[It's] important to focus on the next game for the league and then think about the second leg against Lyon," Amorim said. "When one player has a mistake, all the team has a mistake so we continue like that.”

Onana was embroiled in a pre-match row after Nemanja Matic called the 29-year-old "one of the worst keepers in Manchester United history" earlier this week, part of a back-and-forth between the two players that set the narrative for the contest.

Matic, who spent five years with the Red Devils and now plays for the Ligue 1 side, watched from the bench as Onana misjudged Thiago Almada's 25th-minute strike and gave up a big rebound that led to Rayan Cherki's stoppage-time equaliser as United were forced to leave the Groupama Stadium with the draw.

With Matic's pre-match words still fresh, Amorim remained steadfast that one game won't decide Onana's fate as United's No. 1.

"We continue to do the same thing," Amorim said. "Training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best eleven to win every match."
